Every round
10 rounds · 90 tiesThe Champions League is UEFA's top club competition. 36 clubs contest the league phase — one shared table, eight matches each against eight different opponents — 29 of them entering directly and seven coming through qualifying. Qualifying runs in two parallel paths, one for domestic champions and one for everyone else, every tie over two legs — and a qualifying loser is usually not out of Europe: at most stages the losers drop into the Europa League. After the league phase the top eight go straight to the round of 16, clubs placed 9th to 24th meet in a two-legged knockout play-off, and the bottom twelve are out of Europe altogether — no club drops out of the league phase into a lower competition. The final is in Madrid on 5 June 2027. UEFA publishes all dates as subject to change.
Who plays · 28 champions of Europe's lowest-ranked associations open the competition — 14 ties. There is no preliminary round this season, so qualifying starts here. The losers stay in Europe: they drop into the Conference League's second qualifying round, two of them straight into its third.
